Perhaps my favorite book of 2020, and that's saying something because I had a lot of favorites this year!! This quilt of a graphic novel weaves together many different narratives: Tiến and his mother's life in present day, the past in Vietnam, and the fairytales they read together. There's so much magic in the interplay of Nguyen's precise images and the layered stories; describing it would only deprive future readers of the utter joy of turning each page to new visual delights. If you liked The Prince & the Dressmaker, you'll love The Magic Fish.
