This picturebook takes place on Jeju Island in Korea, where the haenyeo divers reign under the sea. These women are so so cool—they dive up to 30 meters (which is almost 100 feet!) with just wetsuits and goggles to collect mollusks and other sea life to eat and sell. This book centers Dayeon, the granddaughter of a diver who is scared to venture into the ocean, but she soon learns that the sea, while intimidating, provides peace as well as these divers' livelihood. Backmatter further explains the history of the haenyeo and the modern conditions that impact their traditions.
