As a 6 year old girl in the 80's, I was obsessed with pirates. I watched Captain Blood almost as much as Beauty & the Beast. My lego set? Spanish Galleon. My halloween costumes? Let's just say they involved plastic swords and garish sashes. My fixation has waned since then. Still, I occasionally want to have my swash buckled and read an ancient mariner's tale. The Wager, while not a pirate story, fits the bill. It's the story of the HMS Wager, its wreck and the subsequent mutiny. It's a survival story of those who were forced to decide where their loyalty was due: their captain, or their lives.
