At the insanely young age of 21, Tillie Walden is already an incredible talent, and Spinning is exactly the kind of moving, insightful coming-of-age tale for girls that my wife is always complaining don't exist.

The Largesse of the Sea Maiden: Stories By Denis Johnson Cover Image
Unavailable at this time.
ISBN: 9780812988635
Published: Random House - January 16th, 2018

Denis Johnson is one of those authors I have a hard time talking about without lapsing into absurd superlatives, so I won't even try to restrain my praise for his latest (and, sadly, last) story collection. The title story alone is worth the price of admission, and ranks among the best short stories I have ever read; The Largesse of the Sea Maiden is as disarmingly funny and as sneakily sublime as anything Johnson has written. We are lucky that Denis Johnson, who sadly passed away last May, has graced us with this final masterpiece--it's as fine a swan song as any author could hope for.

The Quickest Kid in Clarksville By Pat Zietlow Miller, Frank Morrison (Illustrator) Cover Image
ISBN: 9781452129365
Availability: Out of stock, usually available in 3-10 days
Published: Chronicle Books - February 9th, 2016

Alta knows she's the quickest kid in Clarksville, TN—Wilma Rudolph's hometown—even though her shoes are a little beat up. But Charmaine, in her snazzy new sneaks, thinks she can best Alta in a foot race. Frank Morrison's illustrations are a treat: he portrays both runners as contagiously exuberant and physics-defying. Though egos and body parts bruise, the two girls ultimately team together to keep moving forward. Sometimes, life is easier as a relay.

Women & Power: A Manifesto By Mary Beard Cover Image
ISBN: 9781631494758
Availability: Out of stock, usually available in 3-10 days
Published: Liveright - December 12th, 2017

Carrying this book feels like carrying a knife. Like a sharp and discreet weapon, it's easily brandished when confronted with the notion that power disparity among the sexes and "women's issues" are really a baseless non-issue. Beard takes an important step (one we could all take) to trace such insidious notions back to their dirty roots.

In Other Lands By Sarah Rees Brennan, Carolyn Nowak (Illustrator) Cover Image
By Sarah Rees Brennan, Carolyn Nowak (Illustrator)
Unavailable at this time.
ISBN: 9781618731203
Published: Big Mouth House - August 15th, 2017

Elliott is pretty sure magic land is awful: everyone appreciates sword fighting more than a witty comeback; his teachers at the Border School refuse to let him sensibly use a pencil instead of a quill; and even though elves, dwarves, mermaids, and harpies are real, they seem hellbent on fighting endless wars with each other. But it's better than home in the real world. And he has two best friends (if his constant rage and sarcasm don't drive them away): a warrior elf maiden, and a shy jock with a big secret. This is a smart, sweet, hilarious book that truly made me laugh out loud.

A Road Unforeseen: Women Fight the Islamic State By Meredith Tax Cover Image
ISBN: 9781942658108
Availability: Out of stock, usually available in 3-10 days
Published: Bellevue Literary Press - August 23rd, 2016

If you have any interest in the fight against totalitarian theocracy, then you must read A Road Unforeseen. I found it to be a thorough, well organized primer on Kurdistan, ISIS, and the self governing region known as Rojava. Meredith Tax is a phenomenal researcher, and makes this deeply complicated topic very readable. Still not convinced? THIS IS ABOUT WOMEN FIGHTING AN INSANE DEATH CULT.

For readers who remember what it is like to use the click-wheel on a first generation iPod, or watched Gideon Yago on MTV2, this book is for you. Exploring the rise and fall of the post-9/11 indie music scene that grew from the grimy grates of NYC and beyond, the oral history includes vibrant voices like Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem, The Strokes, Interpol, and other bands that your cool older sister introduced to you back in middle school.
