Lauren Wolk has become a favorite author of mine. I just love her. Her earlier book, Wolf Hollow, I savored and loved. Her quiet, powerful, and effecting stories sit deep with me and I find myself revisiting them. Beyond the Bright Sea follows the story of a 12 year old girl named Crow on her quest to discover where she came from and who she is. Found as an new born baby, washed up on the coast of one of the Elizabeth Islands, she looks and is treated differently. Crow's inner strength, determination, and kind heart are astounding. I can't wait to see what Lauren Wolk will do next.

This book had a significant impact on me. It's was heartbreaking, hopeful, and thought provoking. Although it's a children's book, I feel it should be read by everyone. In the story you follow a young boy fleeing Hitler's Germany with his family, a girl escaping Cuba and Castro in 1994, and a Syrian family in 2015 attempting to make their way to Europe after their home is bombed. These are stories that need to be heard. I feel changed after finishing this and better for it.

First off Daniel Wallace is a favorite author of mine and I was super excited about his newest endeavor. While this is quite a bit different than Big Fish, I adored this book! Being stuck in the mundane routine of life is a place many of us have experienced at one time or another. Edsel Bronfman is no different except for the fact that mediocrity has defined his life so far. Having the courage to step out of himself, take chances, and choose to be uncomfortable was inspiring and a good kick in the pants for me. This quiet and powerful story has stuck with me and I couldn't be more thankful for having read it.

Toby, a homeless World War 1 vet, has shown her kindness and even intervened to protect her from the bully. This intricate and complex novel was an amazing read. The time period is late Victorian but very different from the one in the history books. People emanate smoke from their bodies with any sinful, unclean, or fearful thoughts. Smoke comes in many colors and forms depending on the person and the nature of their thoughts. It permeates all aspects of society and culture. The story was fascinating and thought provoking but the characters were the best part of the story. I got attached and genuinely cared about them. This was so engrossing and wonderful. I can't recommend it more!

Stuck in a dead end town she dreams of escape. She is a skilled sharp shooter and quick on her feet. Both serve her well when she meets a young man on the run from the army. Full of adventure, this story pulled me along. An amazing debut, I can't wait to see what's coming next from this author.

People fear them, and the government is trying to kill them. Sixteen year old Adelina must navigate this treacherous landscape while discovering the alarming and exhilarating power within her. First off I am a huge fan of Jonathan Stroud and have read all of his books. This is the start of his newest series and I really loved it. The Screaming Staircase is a wonderfully creepy, spooky, mystery with a well timed sharp wit that had me cracking up through the story. Ghosts are plaguing Britain and only children and teens can hear and see them. Using iron, salt and quick thinking young Lucy and Lockwood get tangled in a complex mystery full of twists and turns. I really love this book, on so many levels. The dark and wry humor felt like a breath of fresh air. In this world everyone knows, from a young age, what day they will die and Denton has one day left. Living through his last day was such a pleasure. You"re right there with him as he navigates girls, family, and reflects on how he's lived his life. Lance Rubin treats this tricky topic with reverence, pairing sarcasm with real issues. I laughed and cried as craziness and chaos surround Denton. I loved all the emotion and turmoil from a teenage boys perspective. I didn't want it to end and I couldn't wait to see how the story played out. It's a pleasure to put this book into as many hands as I can.

We are lucky to know and love so many different kinds of families in our own lives and this book mirrors that; teaching us that love is what binds all of us, no matter what our families look like. Having moved far from relatives, we have made our own family of adopted grandmas and aunts and uncles and they've been a huge part of my son's life. So, this is not my usual kind of book. I see big poofy dresses on the cover and I judge. But Ruby Red and its sequels are wonderfully fun. I've had to alter my quick judgement of book covers. It was the perfect guilty pleasure. There's time travel, amazing fashion from the past, green-eyed boys with long dark lashes, oh and don't forget the ghosts. But I loved this book most of all because of Gwenyth. She is a clever, feisty, and fiery 16 year-old that actually acts like a teenager. This book is surprisingly funny and just over the top enough to not take itself too seriously. And I even loved all the poofy dresses!

Sidekicks is now a new favorite at my house. The heroes of the story are the pets of an aging, allergy riddled superhero. He's looking for a new sidekick and they are bound and determined to step up to the plate and show him they are worthy. With big panels, full color, and beautiful art this is a great story to share with younger readers. And older kids, and adults like me, will fall in love with the art. This strange and peculiar story caught my attention with its fable-like story telling. The characters crept into my thoughts during the quiet moments of my day: when I was drifting off to sleep, cooking dinner, or driving in my car. It's a tall tale written in a way that makes you want to believe it, to know that it's all possible. This fast paced, action packed novel is full of fun and surprises. But that's not what I love about it. Mathew Kirby is specially gifted in writing amazing characters that you get to know, care about, and wish you could meet. It's why he's one if my favorite authors and he shines in this book like all his others. This story is about using your imagination to change reality and the consequences and dangers that go along with it. Watching how his characters handle this precarious situation was most fun of all. I have read all of Matthew Kirby's books and loved them all. This is no exception.

To say this book was amazing or that I loved it just feels inadequate. I listened to the audio book and spent whole trips in the car from West Seattle to work crying. Other days I cracked up all the way. When I was done with the audio I bought the book and started reading. I wasn't ready to be done. The story is incredibly real and raw. Eleanor and Park are both complicated, interesting and wonderful. But the real reason this book has become a part of me and why I haven't fallen in love with a book like this in years is kindness. It permeates every part of their relationship, gives me hope and causes me to try harder in my own life.

Brilliant, silly, and so much fun, I think I enjoy reading this to my five year old as much as he does. He asks for it nearly every night for bedtime. Who needs a pet dog when you can have a train? The story is clever, lyrical and paired perfectly with fantastic artwork. John Rocco is a favorite artist of mine. If you haven't checked out his Caldecott honor book, Blackout, it's most definitely worth it. Take a minute to read How to Train a Trainand share it with your favorite little person, girl or boy--you're sure to evoke an "AGAIN!" just like I did.

When Lin is transported to another land, she is astonished to find her pet vole there to greet her. She is in Sylver, a place where pets go after they die in the human world. Super fun and interesting, I thoroughly enjoyed this action packed and sweet tale.

I've read all he's written and was over the moon to get my hands on his newest book. The Lost Kingdom is full of adventure and amazing inventions. A young boy sets out on a mission in search of a mythical colony to align with against the French 1750's America. Aboard a flying ship full of brilliant philosophers, young Billy is thrown into intrigue and danger. I raced through this book and loved every minute of it. Besides being a fantastic storyteller, the reason I fall in love with Matthew Kirby's books every time is his gift for creating full, compassionate, and real characters. They are believable and stay with me long after I've finished the last page. His characters deal with emotions and feelings that we all encounter in ways that give me pause.

The Lost Kingdom is no exception. Billy wrestles with the realization that his father has flaws and prejudices that are impossible to look past; it's tender and painful and sticks with you. This is a swashbuckling thrill ride riddled with moments that make the characters alive.

The first thing out of my almost-five year old son's mouth when I read this to him was "AGAIN". Need I say more? Silly and goofy, it made us laugh and want to color when we were done. This was so much fun to read aloud I'm happy to read it to my little guy again and again. I'm a big fan of Oliver Jeffers and was so excited for this latest book. If you haven't checked out his earlier book, This Moose Belongs to Me, you really really need to! Take a minute to crack this gem open or better yet read it to your favorite little person and be ready to smile.

This story drew me in and transported me to a place I didn't want to leave. The setting is turn of the century New York where two mythical beings are struggling to make their way in the world. I kept thinking about my great grandparents in New York at the same time and the struggles people endured every day. The connection with the characters and the story was vivid. I was reminded why I love to read and why I love my job. I'm looking forward to putting this one into people's hands.

I adored this book. The writing is exquisite. The story is intricate, personal and moving. This is such a different kind of World War II story, told in a compelling and beautiful way. She weaves the story of two young women thrown together by their roles in the war effort for the Allies. One is a trained spy and the other is a gifted pilot. Their friendship and courage is at the center of this story. I felt so connected that I shared their triumph, joy and heartache like I was right there with them. I found myself thinking about the war and all the amazing acts of bravery small and large that people performed. This is such an astounding and important book. I look forward to rereading it and adding it to my list of all-time favorite novels.

All the Elephant and Piggie books are hysterical. They are full of humor and important lessons that any preschooler will relate to. We love them all but my son and I's favorite is Let's Go for a Drive. Elephant and Piggie plan to take a drive and assemble all the things necessary for their trip only to discover that they don't have a car! While Elephant is sobbing over their ruined plans Piggie suggests they play pirates instead. They proceed to have a fabulous adventure instead of going for a drive. My son William and I giggle and laugh while we read this book but the underlying lesson really made an impression when our plans with a friend were cancelled at the last minute. William was about to burst into tears when we talked about this book and made plans for our own new adventure. Elephant and Piggie saved the day! I just might send Mo Willems a thank you.

This is the first book I've read in awhile that really surprised, shocked, and blindsided me. Aliens want Earth, without us on it, and very few have survived. Cassie is among those who are still alive and fighting. She could be your daughter, sister, or best friend. She was real and raw and completely engaging. This book had me reading while cooking, during lunch breaks, and any spare second I could find. I was transformed, sucked in and lost and loved every minute of it.

I love this author's adult series and she doesn't disappoint with her first foray into the world of young adult fiction. Etiquette and Espionage was a rollicking ride of steampunk fun! Silly and intriguing, this is just the thing when life is busy and stressful. If you haven't checked out her adult science fiction series Soulless, you need to--it's fantastic as well!

I find the books I love the most are the hardest to write about. This story was a breath of fresh air in a sea of young adult books that seem to retell the same stories over and over. The main characters being, essence, or soul inhabits a different person every day and has done so for their whole life. Then one day they fall in love with the girlfriend of one of the bodies they possess. What happens next was unexpected and wonderful to watch unfold. It was amazing to witness all the lives they encountered and to realize how easy it is to take for granted all the consistencies we have in life. Fascinating and engaging I had trouble putting this down and longed to return to it.

Soveig is not your typical heroine. She is plain and forgotten, trapped with her siblings on a frozen fiord. Her strength, bravery, and compassion have made her one of my favorite characters, ever. This story is full of courage, and small kindnesses that help you believe in the goodness of people. With lots of action, suspense, and amazing Norse myths retold through Solveig's eyes this is a book to savor and an author to watch.

Cinderella Smith is sweet and feisty and Wove herself right into my heart with this delightful story. She has a penchant for loosing shoes, hence her nickname. Her refreshing way of handling the ups and downs of friends, jealousy, and tap dancing pageants makes this a must-read for girls everywhere. It’s fun but also important reading for kids navigating the world of friendships new and old. Coupled with illustrations by Caldecott Honor winner Diane Goode, this is truly a gem!
