Third Place Books Ravenna welcomes Pongo Poetry Project to our Ravenna store! Attendees will learn more about Pongo’s vital work in supporting the mental and emotional well-being of vulnerable youth, and be treated to readings of poetry authored by Pongo’s youth writers and community members.
Pongo will have youth poetry anthologies for sale, raffle prizes, and information on upcoming initiatives and ways to get involved with their work. This event is free, open to the public, and light refreshments will be served.
Pongo Poetry Project is a 27-year-old non-profit whose mission is to engage youth in writing poetry to inspire healing and growth. Pongo accomplishes its mission through the Pongo Method—an approach to facilitating personal poetry with trauma-affected youth with barriers to self-expression. Developed in consultation with prominent community psychiatrists, the Pongo Method has been validated by impressive results in five pilot studies and overwhelmingly positive youth survey results. Led by experienced teaching artists, small teams of Pongo-trained adult volunteers facilitate personal poetry one-on-one with students at sites like King County Juvenile Detention. For counselors, teachers, and caregivers, Pongo offers national trainings, free web resources, and a book about our method, Writing with At-Risk Youth: The Pongo Teen Writing Method by Richard Gold, Pongo’s Founder.
