The project explores Mexico over the last thirty years by highlighting the challenges and beauty of life just south of the border. Collectively, the photographs invite dialogue between Mexico and the United States as viewers on both sides may recognize something of themselves in the pictures.
Emily Matyas is a photographer whose interests combine family relations, culture and psychology. She began as a journalist, then moved on to fine art. Her work includes intimate settings from Mexico to Romania and the U.S. Most of her imagery is figurative, utilizing her immediate family, friends and herself. Her portfolio of life in rural Mexico spans 30 years, and is published in her monograph, Sol y Tierra/Sun and Earth (Daylight Books 2019). She received her MFA in photography from Arizona State University, taught at the college level for several years and has led many youth workshops. Her images are widely exhibited and collected. She is the recipient of two Julia Margaret Cameron Awards. In her latest work, the partnering projects of I Am My Ancestors, and Coming to America, she explores issues of cultural identity and immigration by photographing herself as her grandmother, in Romania and the United States.
