We asked everyone at all three Third Place Books locations for their 10 favorite books of 2023, and from the hundreds of fantastic books, compiled the ten that appeared on the most lists.
Our Top Ten Favorite Books of 2023
In this gently fantastic and hallucinatory first novel by celebrated graphic designer Peter Mendelsund (What We See When We Read), Percy Frobisher travels to a kind of uncanny TED-conference institute in the desert to work on a project that grows more unfocused as the days pass, while becoming more and more fascinated with a local shop that can apparently reproduce anything at all.
Reading Mark Beyer's Agony is a uniquely surreal and exhilarating experience. Beyer--a giant within the world of underground comics who once regularly graced the pages of Art Spiegelman's RAW magazine--draws with childlike abandon and tells stories (and jokes) like a man with a lifetime of suffering under his belt. I could try to say more about this book's bizarre charms, but the excellent introduction from Colson Whitehead does a much better job than I ever could. I'll just say: this is a book to tickle your funny bone and haunt your dreams.
A Caribbean Heiress in Paris changes the paradigm for standard historical romance bodice ripper. I don't say this lightly: about 90% of what I read is romance, and the historical bodice ripper is my favorite subgenre. Adriana Herrera has done careful, decolonized research to share the story of a Dominican rum heiress and a Scottish Earl. Though set in Paris and Scotland, this book is rich in diversity and chalk full of refreshing, enlightened details. This is the historical romance I've been waiting for.
