Perec is an author who found inspiration in constraint. His novel "A Void" was written entirely without the letter E. This novella resulted from a dare to write a book that uses a computer algorithm as it's structural model. The result is a hilarious trip through the maze of considerations one might navigate in a quest for "pecuniary emoluments."

This short work is a great introduction to the casual ease with which Balzac paints the world in prose. It has inspired generations of artists and is the starting point for "La Belle Noiseuse", one of my very favorite films, by director Jacques Rivette -Eric
